Looking to get away for wonderful walks by the Thames and a lovely cosy place to stay then Forge House is ideal.
We want you to know that we’re doing our part to help our guests stay safe by cleaning and disinfecting frequently touched surfaces (light switches, doorknobs, cabinet handles, remotes, etc.) before you check in.
Wallingford is a wonderful market town situated on the banks of the River Thames, situated between Reading (12 miles), Henley-on-Thames (11 miles) and Oxford (13 miles) and surrounded by beautiful countryside.
This sumptuously renovated holiday let is suitable for up to 3 people (or 2 adults x 2 small children). It has been fitted out to a high standard by Philippa, who is an Interior Designer with a hotel background. The fully equipped apartment is in the Art Deco style with a 'nod' to our famous local resident 'Agatha Christie'. The house is situated in a quiet street in the center of this lovely market town which is on the banks of the River Thames and surrounded by beautiful countryside.
History
Wallingford is steeped in history and the remains of Wallingford's Motte and Bailey castle and the Castle Gardens are a great place to explore and a good venue for a summer picnic. You can also trace Wallingford’s Saxon past at the museum wallingfordmuseum.org.uk which offers local history walks and other events.
Murder Mysteries!
Wallingford also has a strong presence in murder mystery fiction. Agatha Christie (whose remains are buried at nearby Cholsey) lived and worked in Wallingford, taking influence from local landmarks and residents in Winterbrook for stories such as Miss Marple. Our apartment has been influenced by this 'Queen of Crime' and you will find lots of references to her books and plays. See what clues you can find.
More recently, Wallingford is the location of Causton in the TV series Midsomer Murders. Many of the series’ extras herald from Wallingford and much of the filming is completed in this beautiful part of the country. Take a look at www.visitmidsomer.com to learn more.
Activities
For the more active there are many miles of walking trails, either along the Thames Path or up into the Chiltern Hills. The Ridgeway National Trail passes within a 10 min walk of wallingford.
The Thames passes through Wallingford and day boats can be hired locally as well as weekly hires from Benson Marina. Cruises can be taken in the Summer to Abingdon or Reading.
There is a heated outdoor pool and splash pool by the bridge, free tennis courts in the Bullcroft Park as well as a playground.
Also nearby is Didcot Railway center, Aston Martin Heritage Trust, Dorchester Cathedral, Pendon model railway center, the Oxford museums, Henley Rowing Museum as well as many others interesting places to visit.
"The Forge was a perfect base for our weekend in Wallingford. The location is great, it’s really close to local pubs & restaurants whilst still being very peaceful. There are plenty of good country walks
nearby, too. The place is very clean, cosy and was equipped with everything we needed for our stay. Chris was a great host. We would happily stay again. ."
